Update Letters - Hooray!

OK, so I'm still about 2 weeks behind where I'd wanted to be, but I'm catching up.

I've written and sent out my 3-month update e-mail and another info package to Mary. She's graciously written 6 letters to her friends and family, enclosing donation coupons and envelopes, that I've added my two cents (a modified version of the 3-month update letter) and dropped into the mail today. I also sent copies of the update letter and my newsletter article draft (on floppy disk to save some typing) as well as my 3-page donor list and a "thank you" note. This will give us both something else to do after she settles back into her work routine.

Fundraising is still going well, although it's kinda standing still at $1385. I expect that it will pick up after I get my lazy butt in gear and send out that update letter, so I'm not complaining. I think it's also a challenge that the Event is in October, so most folks feel they've got plenty of time. . . but October will be here much more quickly than we all think!

Other than that, it's been a very low-key week, for which I am thankful. One highlight, though, is that my bucket hat arrived today and it has a nice broad brim to keep my neck shaded, plus it's a little big, so it'll fit on my swelled head. I also ordered 2 ponchos, one to train with and one to keep fresh for the Event. I feel like I'm almost all geared up. . . my last thing to get is sunscreen with bug repellant in it, but there's an Avon brand that has one with dye in it so you don't forget where you put it, like the Coppertone for Kids stuff that's glittery. Plus, since it's the "for kids" version, I'm hoping it will be gentler on my oh-so-sensitive skin!

Anyhoo, that's all for now. . . let's get out and train!

Men DO Care, Too

Not like this surprises me, considering that many of my most staunch supporters are men, but this article, which appeared in this past Sunday's Boston Globe, features the Men With Heart team in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

It's a wonderful and inspiring article that everyone should read. =)

Too Good Not to Share

Lizzy's Note: This was originally posted on the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2004 Message Board as a post entitled "AWARENESS". If I find out to whom it should be properly credited, as it was copied from a forwarded e-mail, I will update you all with that information. If not, thank you cyberspace.

Enjoy!

Mammogram: A Poem

For years and years they told me, Be careful of your breasts.
Don't ever squeeze or bruise them. And give them monthly tests.

So I heeded all their warnings, And protected them by law.
Guarded them very carefully, And I always wore my bra.

After 30 years of astute care, My gyno, Dr. Pruitt,
Said I should get a Mammogram "O.K," I said, "let's do it."

"Stand up here real close" she said,(She got my boob in line),
"And tell me when it hurts," she said, "Ah yes! Right there, that's fine."

She stepped upon a pedal, I could not believe my eyes!
A plastic plate came slamming down, My hooter's in a vise!

My skin was stretched and mangled, From underneath my chin.
My poor boob was being squashed,To Swedish Pancake thin.

Excruciating pain I felt, Within it's vise-like grip.
A prisoner in this vicious thing, My poor defenseless tit!

"Take a deep breath" she said to me, Who does she think she's kidding?!?
My chest is mashed in her machine, And woozy I am getting.

"There, that's good," I heard her say, (The room was slowly swaying.)
"Now, let's have a go at the other one." Have mercy, I was praying.

It squeezed me from both up and down, It squeezed me from both sides.
I'll bet SHE'S never had this done, To HER tender little hide.

Next time that they make me do this,I will request a blindfold.
I have no wish to see again,My knockers getting steam rolled.

If I had no problem when I came in, I surely have one now.
If there had been a cyst in there, It would have gone "ker-pow!"

This machine was created by a man, Of this, I have no doubt.
I'd like to stick his balls in there, And see how THEY come out!

OK gals, now that you have had your laugh, remember... Breast Cancer Awareness... Go have those boobs checked out and stay healthy!

Pass the message on to your mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, cousins, friends -- and even your enemies -- because the WORST enemy is Breast Cancer!

Countdown to Kickoff. . .

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events kick off in less than a month with the Washington, DC walk on May 1st & 2nd. Good luck, good health and good weather wishes to all participants in this first Walk of 2004!

Of our hundreds, if not thousands, of registered walkers, there are 6 people who are making the effort to walk all 6 scheduled Avon events. One of those who I have been privileged to "meet" is Alyssa Keene. The Boston Herald recently ran a story about athletes and their motivation, and she's featured alongside a marathon runner and an Olympic swimmer . . . everyone should read this. The link is right here.

Go read her Avon Page (linked from her name) and the article.
