Post-Walk Recap

So, the New York City Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2006 attracted 3,550 Walkers and raised $9.7 MILLION to fight breast cancer in the New York area.

Grants distributed at Closing Ceremonies will benefit great programs, including the Cancer Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

We welcomed Survivors from many of the countries where the Avon "Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer" events have taken place over the past year. . .and where we hope to continue them to reach out to future generations of girls and women.

The Crew surprised us with a triumphant "entry" . . . on board a yacht! They waved and we applauded and took photos. . .and we want to see how they will top this next year!

This year, I cried at Opening and I cried at Closing. Happy and sad tears. Happy for the new hope we had given many of our own Survivors and sad for the friends and family members we lost to breast cancer, including my coworker Nancy.

I wonder how many times I told people about Nancy this weekend. . .probably as many miles as I walked. And walking with a young survivor, my new friend Anne, helped me remember that cancer doesnt always win. We can fight and we can survive.

As Seth the MooCowGuy says, "we really gotta stop doing this!"

Yes, Seth, we really gotta stop doing this. But we all know we shall continue until we find a cure.

Come and join me next year. More feet and funds toward the cause take us CLOSER to the Cure.

We can do this. We will cure it.
